San Francisco Chronicle (CA) - October 9, 2009 Deceased Name: Lionel Horwitz - longtime journalist Lionel Horwitz, a journalist at the Examiner and former press liaison to Hubert Humphrey, died after a lengthy illness Sept 29 in San Francisco, his family said. He was 86. Mr. Horwitz was born in 1923 in Duluth, Minn., where his passion for newspapers began as a boy by selling papers on street corners in Minneapolis, recalled Bea Pixa, a colleague at the Examiner. He later joined the Merchant Marines, graduated from the University of Minnesota and interned with CBS newsman Eric Sevareid as a Washington correspondent and radio reporter. He eventually met a budding politician, Hubert Humphrey, and worked on Humphrey's mayoral race in Minneapolis and again when Humphrey ran for vice president in 1964. "That was the highlight of his political work," said Georgiana Horwitz, who was married to Mr. Horwitz for 28 years. Mr. Horwitz moved to California in the early 1950s and became the news editor and publisher of the Walnut Creek News. In 1952, he bought the Livermore News and served as the paper's editor and publisher before he landed a job on the copy desk of the Examiner in the early 1960s. After retiring in 1984, Mr. Horwitz continued to send e-mails and critiques to reporters, including a missive to MSNBC personality Jim Cramer, which was read on the air, his wife said. "Journalism was his life," she said. "He read and read and read - until he couldn't read anymore." Georgiana Horwitz met her future husband at a friend's party nearly 30 years ago inside an apartment in the Haight Ashbury district. After they married, the couple enjoyed hosting large Christmas Day parties for friends at their Noe Valley home. "He was Jewish and I'm Catholic," Mrs. Horwitz said. "We wanted a place for friends from both religions to come and celebrate the holidays." In addition to his wife, Mr. Horwitz is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 17 at the Horwitz's home. Donations in his memory may be made to San Francisco General Hospital or the Red Cross. San Francisco Chronicle (CA) |
